becoming a mentor

3 Step Application Process

1. Application

Please submit AFKA Mentor application below.

2. Referral

The intake process will require a referral from your support worker after we receive your application. We will ask your support worker about your personal skill and strengths, your experience in the child intervention system, your communication skills and whether you would make a great mentor overall. This will also be discussed with you during the application process.

3. Contact

Successful applicants will be invited via email and/or phone to complete a mentor orientation session, which will take approximately 30 – 45 minutes. Please note that participating in the orientation session is mandatory to participating in the mentorship program

If the applicant meets the qualifications, has strong communication skills and personal strengths, has experience with various aspects of the child intervention system, as well as the support of their support worker, they will be considered an excellent candidate to become a mentor.

There are a few reasons why you may not have been selected. Either your application is incomplete, or your referral does not support your application.

Mentors and mentees are matched on the basis of what areas of knowledge are marked on the referral forms, in addition to their geographical locations. We will try to match you up as best as possible to the closest mentee in your area.

We will notify all successful applicants via email and/or phone as soon as possible.

Mentors typically correspond with their mentee via phone or email once per week, in addition to in person approximately once per month or as needed. The mentee and mentor are encouraged to discuss and establish an approach and schedule that best meets their needs.

Please contact program staff, should you run into any difficulties throughout your mentoring relationship. If there is incompatibility for any reason, you and your mentee will be asked to comment so appropriate follow-up action can be taken.

Please contact program staff, and include specific details of your situation.
